Assam Sibsagar TourismSibsagar, the famous centre for tea and oil is an ancient town of Assam. The term Sibsagar means 'The Ocean of Shiva'. It is situated 60 km from Jorhat, 369 km from Guwahati and 150 km from Kazirabga National Park. This town was once the capital of the Ahoms Dynasty which enjoyed power in Assam for around 600 years. Reflecting the glory of the past, the monuments within the town belonging to the Ahams rulers are worth a visit. Their architecture is a window to the culture of Assam. These ancient monuments have now been preserved as the National Protected Monuments. A huge man made tank spreading over an area of 129 acres is located within the town. It is known as the Sibsagar Lake and was constructed 200 years ago. Queen Madambika laid its foundation in 1734. One of the main attractions of Sibsagar is the ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is the tallest Shiv temple in India. There are several places of tourist interest near Sibsagar. Some of them are: Charaideo: It is dotted with several tombs(are almost in ruins) of the kings and their family members. The tombs are fashioned to resemble the pyramids of Egypt. It is located only 28 km from Sibsagar. Gaurisagar Group: It is a tank built by the Queen Phuleswari in 1723. The banks of the tank are dotted with three temples. It is situated 16 km from Sibsagar. Gargaon Palace: This palace was built during the rule of the Ahom Dynasty in the 15th century. It is 13 km away from Sibsagar. Other nearby attractions are Talatal Ghar, Rang Ghar and Kereng Ghar.
