Navagraha Temple AssamThe Navagraha Temple in Assam is dedicated to the nine celestial bodies of the Universe. It is located on the top of Chitrasal Hill or Navagraha Hill in the capital city Guwahati. The temple houses nine Shivalingams symbolizing the nine celestial bodies. Each celestial body is covered with a coloured cloth representing each of the celestial bodies. These celestial bodies surround the Shivalingam which is the symbol of the Sun. The nine celestial bodies(grahas) are Surya(Sun), Chandra(Moon),Mangala (Mars), Budha (Mercury), Brihaspati (Jupiter), Sukra (Venus), Sani (Saturn), Rahu and Ketu. The Navagraha temple was constructed by the Ahom king Rajeswar Singha in the late 18th century. Later it was given a face-lift to make it look more beautiful. Astrological and astronomical research is carried out in this temple.
