Shilong Meghalaya

Shillong is undoubtedly a tourist's delight. Nature exists nowhere as in Shillong. This lesser known hill station is simply magical.

Hooked at a height of 1,496 meters, Shillong is fondly known as the 'Scotland of East'. Nature has been partial when it comes to Shillong. Pine trees, waterfalls, mountain streams, lakes and gorges come together to make Shillong a paradise for nature lovers.

Shillong, the capital city of Meghalaya, has grown tremendously in terms of everything – culture, size, beliefs, traditions and economy. During the rule of the British, this city used to serve as a great holiday destination for British civilians for escaping the scorching heat of the plains. Cherrapunjee, the place which receives the highest rainfall in the world is only 56 kilometers from Shillong.

Best Time to Travel:
Shillong is pretty cold in winters and hot and humid during summers. June, July and August are the monsoon months. The best time to come to the city is between October- April.

Cuisine:
Shillong offers mouth-watering culinary delights such as cheesy pizzas, burgers, momos (famous dish) and chowmien. The traditional non-vegetarian dishes of Shillong are 'jado' – a combination of rice and pork, 'dohkhlieh' – a pork salad and 'jastem' – a rice dish.

Accommodation:
Finding a good accommodation in Shillong will never be a problem for the tourists. Being the capital city of Meghalaya, Shillong has numerous good hotels in and around it. Some of the hotels are Hotel Centre Point, Alpine Continental, Hotel Pegusus Crown, Hotel Pine Borough and hotel Embassy.

Shopping:
There are several shopping items to choose from. The famous ones are cane and bamboo baskets in different sizes, hand woven shawls and orange flower honey. Several other handicrafts are also available. The hot spots for shopping are Burra Bazaar, Police Bazaar, Didar Market and GS Road. Famous shopping outlets are Meghalaya Handloom and Handicrafts Emporium, Assam Emporium and Manipur Emporium.
