War CemeteriesThe Imphal War Cemetery houses the graves of the soldiers of indomitable spirit. They sacrificed their lives for their land. This Cemetery reminds the passers-by about the heroic deeds of the Indian soldiers. They fought bravely against the British during the Second World War. They lived a noble life and died a noble death. Even today after so many years the people of Manipur come here to pay respect to the soldiers. The War Cemetery is located at a distance of 10 km from the centre of the capital city along the National Highway No. 39. It houses around 1,600 graves of the soldiers which are maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Earlier the Cemetery housed only 950 soldiers, later the administrative authorities of the Cemetery transferred the graves of the soldiers placed in two other cemeteries of Imphal to this War Cemetery and the total number became 1,600. The graves have stone markers and bronze plaques with the names of the soldiers. The area surrounding the graves is nicely decorated giving a sense of peace. DM College is the nearest landmark to the War Cemetery which is only 1 km from it. A visit to the War Cemetery of Imphal leaves a message in the minds of the visitors – Be Patriotic! |
