The wonderful sport of archery is intricately woven into the culture of Manipur. The history of this sport goes back to ancient times. In fact it was originated in the sub continent of India and North Eastern India. During the age of Rig-Veda, Ramayana and Mahabharata men of merit were expected to be perfect in this sport. Bow and arrow are used to play this interesting sport. The arrows are a pointed metal cap. One has to strike the arrow in the centre of the target which is circular in shape, 8 to 10 inches high and 3 inches in diameter. Usually the range is set at a distance of 100 meters where the target is set. Manipuris are experts in this field. The people of the state encourage their children learn and master the sport of archery. It is a very popular sport in Manipur. Several low-lying areas of Manipur become the venue for this game everyday. Honing their skills, the players practice this sport for hours together and that too on daily basis.
