Trogopan BirdingTrogopan bird is a rare and endangered pheasant endemic only to Nagaland. It is believed that this bird has migrated from the Himalayas. It is one of the most beautiful birds in India. There are five species of Trogopan found in the Himalayas. Trogopan blythii(Jerdon) is the only species found in Nagaland, and is also the state bird of Nagaland. Indiscriminate hunting of this bird has pushed it on the verge of extinction and given it a title - endangered. This colourful bird is found in some of the areas of Nagaland such as Japfu range, Dzuku valley in Kohima district, Pfutsero, foothills of Saramati, Fakim Wildlife Sanctuary, Meluri in Phek district, Noklak in Tuensang District and Satoi range in Zunheboto District. Mostly this bird is spotted at higher altitude ranging from 1800 to 2500 m above sea level. Trogopan bird is in great demand in the black market and a pair of Trogopan is sold for 15, 000 to 20, 000. It is being hunted for its flesh and beautiful feathers. These birds prefer cold climate. Temperature ranging from 5 to 25 ° C is ideal for them.
